How To Get To Koh Tao From Koh Phangan: Your Guide

Book Your Tickets

Booking your ferry ticket is an extremely straightforward process and can be done online or at the ferry terminal in Koh Phangan.

It’s recommended that you book your tickets a couple of days in advance as ferries can fill up fast leaving you with no way to make it to Koh Tao or at a time less than ideal.

During events like the Full Moon Party Ferries can be fully booked for up to a week so make sure you pre-book your tickets to Koh Tao from Koh Phangan as early as possible.

12Go Asia is the most trustworthy source when it comes to pre-booking your tickets.

Alternatively, by arriving at the Thong Sala Port you can book tickets at one of the many terminals here.

So It Is Time To Leave Koh Phangan. Now What?

So you have your ticket and it’s time to go to Koh Tao from Koh Phangan.

Ask your accommodation to arrange transport, usually Songthaews, or walk to the Thong Sala Ferry Port in Koh Phangan and await your ferry.

It is generally recommended to arrive at the port an hour to 45 minutes ahead of departure to check in and take care of any problems that could occur. The journey is between one to two hours so make sure you have enough water with you to avoid dehydration.

Journey To Koh Tao

The staff working at the port will inform you when it is your time to board the selected ferry and instruct you to take all bags with you.

Sometimes they will take your bigger travel bags and tie them under a protective piece of plastic at the back/front of the ferry to free up more space inside and protect the bags from getting wet.

Unlike bus journeys, you do not have specific seats on ferries, unless fully booked, so find a seat and relax for your journey to Koh Tao.

The ferry from Koh Phangan will take between 1-2 hours depending on which ferry you are on.

Arrival In Koh Tao

Once you reach Koh Tao, get off the ferry and an almost free-for-all all will assume as the ferry workers throw your bags onto the sidewalks.

Once collected, you can continue through into the main town.

Depending on where your accommodation is you can walk to where you will be staying, get a taxi or rent a scooter and drive yourself.

If you are located near the Mae Haad Pier you should walk, although there is likely to be an uphill battle at some point haha) if you are at Sairee Beach or further, a taxi or motorbike is essential.

Taxis are always more expensive straight off of the ferry so walk through town little bit in order to get cheaper prices further down the roads

In prime location by Sairee Beach, this hostel will also rent you snorkel equipment and beach towels at your convenience as well as get you discounts from diving companies should you wish to give it a go.

Mid-Price Range

Wyh Hotel – Just a five-minute walk from the beachfront of Sairee Beach, Wyh Hotel offers travellers accommodation in the perfect location while maintaining the highest quality displayed by their reviews on Booking.com.

With the staff receiving a 9+ rating, it is fair to say all your needs will be met when you stay at Wyh Hotel.

Blue Wave House – Situated close to where you arrive at Koh Tao, this hotel is recommended for travellers who want to stay away from the main strip at Sairee Beach and explore the town around Mae Haad.

I stayed around Mae Haad when I was in Koh Tao, and I found plenty to do here. If I wanted to reach the main strip a quick bike journey had us at the nightlife of Koh Tao.

Certainly recommended for couples.
